SOFTWARE
M1 Remote Programming Software
PLEASE READ THE ELKRP2 GUIDE AND RELEASE NOTES BEFORE PROCEEDING
Ness' Remote Programming software (RP) has been rewritten to run on PCs equipped with the Microsoft .NET environment. This new version is titled ElkRP2 and is now released and available for download. YOU MUST HAVE MICROSOFT .NET 2.0 (OR LATER) INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER OR YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO INSTALL OR RUN ElkRP2.
There are three ways to install this latest RP software.
1) It may be downloaded and installed as a new "clean" install on a PC that does not currently have an older version of NessRP.
2) It may be downloaded and installed to "update" an earlier version of ELkRP2 (ie. version 2.0.4, which would only affect/be available for beta testers who had a previous beta version.)
3) It may be downloaded and installed on a PC that already has NessRP version 1.6.26 installed.
If you happen to have a version of NessRP older than 1.6.26 then you MUST FIRST download and install the 1.6.26 update from Ness’ website. Once that is done you may then download and install ElkRP2. During installation, ElkRP2 will copy and update your existing database. The older NessRP 1.6.26 and its database will be left on the hard drive. At some point in the future, the older version may be deleted from your PC.
Question: If I have a version of NessRP older than 1.6.26 why can't I just delete or remove that old version and go straight to RP2? Answer: You could do that, however you will totally lose your entire accounts database. In order to keep all your old account information, your saved database must be converted in the proper sequence. ElkRP2 cannot convert a database older than 1.6.26.
NOTE: If you keep both the old and new versions of RP installed on your computer, be advised they are mutually exclusive. That is, connecting and downloading control panels with one version DOES not update the database of the other version. The databases will become vastly different. In reality, the old version NessRP should only be kept for a short time period, mainly as an emergency backup. After a few months, the older version should be deleted/removed since its database would be old and out of date.
Previous versions of ElkRP and NessRP are available for download below.

FIRMWARE
Firmware updates for M1 Controls and peripherals
Latest version and archives of the M1-G, EZ-8 & EZ-24 firmware. Please read instructions and application notes before applying any updates.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Updating a control with this new firmware will cause the control to Factory DEFAULT its EEPROM memory, thus ERASING ALL CUSTOMER DATA. This default is necessary due to some new and re-structured memory locations. Prior to updating (flashing) any control with this new firmware, we STRONGLY recommend that you perform a full “Receive All” from the control to the NessRP database, then “Save” the account data. After the firmware has been updated it will necessary to do the following:
A. Re-enroll all data bus devices (the defaulting clears the prior enrollment).
B. Use the “Send All” command to restore customer data.
For help with updating M1XIN Input Expanders, see TechNote #2.

WINDOWS 10 ALERT!
IMPORTANT - New Bootware must be installed prior to the new firmware.
IMPORTANT - Attempts to update an M1XEP operating on firmware older than v.2.0.34 will not be possible if the laptop or PC is operating on Windows 10. The reason for this is Windows 10 mandates a larger SSL certificate key that is only understood by M1XEP firmware v.2.0.34 or later. (See release notes for v.2.0.34)
LEGACY ELK-M1XEP UNITS:
Tens of thousands of M1XEP’s are currently installed or on stock room shelves. Because these Elk-M1XEP Ethernet Network Modules currently only support the shorter encryption keys, none of them will connect with a PC running Microsoft Windows 10 without one or more of the following actions or recommendations being followed:
- Update to new FW 2.0.34 which supports the larger encryption keys. Unfortunately, you will need a WinXP, Win7, or Win8 PC for this update since ElkRP on a Windows 10 PC cannot securely connect to the M1XEP until after a successful update.
** If a WinXP, Win7, or Win8 PC is not convenient, Ness has created a Special 2.0.34 Updater utility that may work if the M1XEP contains a version of FW in the range of 1.3.20 to 2.0.33. In recent field testing, this utility permitted the specified M1XEP FW range to be directly updated (onsite ONLY) using a Win10 PC, without the need for ElkRP or a secure connection.
NOTE: This special updater does not work on a M1XEP operating on a FW version older than 1.3.20. In that case, the only solution is to use a WinXP, Win7, or Win8 PC.
- For updating to 2.0.34, and for assured future connectivity, Ness recommends all customers hold on to at least one PC operating on WinXP, Win7, or Win8. Some customers have intentionally rolled back one of their PCs that was recently updated to Win10.
M1XEP Version 2.0.34 Firmware Update | Special M1XEP 2.0.34 Updater Utility |
This special utility is only designed to update the M1XEP to firmware version 2.0.34. The M1XEP must already be operating on versions 1.3.20 to 2.0.33 to use this special updater. Be advised that future M1XEP firmware updates will be still be deployed via the ElkRP secure connectivity method. However, in order to regain connectivity, the M1XEP must first be made compatible with Windows 10 by using an older PC or this special updater.
